India’s attempt to land a robotic spacecraft near the moon’s South Pole on Saturday appeared to end in failure.

The initial parts of the descent went smoothly. But less than two miles above the surface, the trajectory diverged from the planned path. The mission control room fell silent as communications from the lander were lost.

ISRO has lost communication with Chandrayaan 2’s Moon lander ‘Vikram’. The Vikram lander failed to make a smooth soft-landing, unable to bring down its speed to the required level. The failure happened 13 minutes after Vikram began its descent. ISRO chief Sivan confirmed that communication with the lander had been lost and said that data has been analysed.

If the spacecraft crashed — although a communications glitch was also possible, it occurred during a period that Dr. Sivan had called “15 minutes of terror.” A series of steps had to be completed by computers on board the spacecraft in the correct sequence, with no opportunity for do-overs.

The Prime Minister can be seen hugging and consoling the Isro chief shortly after leaving the Isro headquarters.

All is not lost, Chandrayaan-2 not a failed mission:

The Vikram lander failed to make a smooth soft-landing but it's not a failure mission form India. Former US astronaut and space analyst Jerry M Linenger said, “India was trying to do something very, very difficult. Everything was going as planned as the lander came down. Unfortunately, it never quite made it to the hover point. That would be at an altitude of about 400 metre if it had made it to that point, and even if it had not succeeded beyond that, it would have been helpful because the radar altimeters and lasers could have been tested. This would obviously be very helpful for follow-on missions. Overall, the mission has been very successful."

What happened to Vikram Lander?

On September 2, Vikram separated from the mission's orbiter, and the newly freed lander began a series of braking maneuvers to lower its orbit and ready itself for landing.

Did Lander Vikram landed on moon?

On 6 September, India's Vikram lander lost contact with Earth during an attempt to land on the moon and appears to have crashed, just five months after Israel's Beresheet spacecraft faced a similar fate. The mission also includes an orbiter and a six-wheeled rover called Pragyan, which was carried inside the lander.

What happened to ISRO?

It spent the last two weeks lowering its orbit in stepwise descents, before a lander (with a rover onboard) separated from the orbiter on Monday. The lander, named Vikram after the famed Indian astronomer and ISRO founder Vikram Sarabhai, began its descent to the moon on the morning of September 1, local time.

What happened, If the Chandrayaan 2 landing is successful?

If the landing becomes a successful one, then it is going to be India’s first soft landing on the lunar surface. Previously, the United States, Russia and China have been successfully landed machines or humans on the surface of the moon.
