Save Water Save Life: Importance of Water Conservation

“Water is a life” Not only the human being but also for the entire ecosystem water is precious. Water is transparent but it takes the shape of anything when we put it, it’s a pure thing.71 percent of the land is covered by the water on the earth. In which 97 percent of the water is covered by the ocean and only 3 percent of water is in use for drinking and many purposes. It is important to save the water for us and for our future because we totally depend on the water in our Daily Life.

Water covers 71% of the Earth's surface, and is vital for all known forms of life. On Earth, it is found mostly in oceans and other large water bodies, with 1.6% of water below ground in aquifers and 0.001% in the air as vapor, clouds (formed of solid and liquid water particles suspended in air), and precipitation. Oceans hold 97% of surface water, glaciers and polar ice caps 2.4%, and other land surface water such as rivers, lakes and ponds 0.6%. A very small amount of the Earth's water is contained within biological bodies and manufactured products.

Water on Earth moves continually through a cycle of evaporation or transpiration (evapotranspiration), precipitation, and runoff, usually reaching the sea. Over land, evaporation and transpiration contribute to the precipitation over land.

Let's join our hands in saving water as much as possible. Here are the different ways we can follow to save atleast some amount of water per day.

Here are some water facts to remember

  • Less than 1% of the earth’s water is suitable for drinking
  • More than a billion people around the globe survive on just over 1 gallon (4 liters) of water per day
  • Potentially more than 3 billion people may suffer from water shortages by the year 2025
  • 66% of the human body is water
  • A person can only live without water for approximately one week

Some of Facts about, How valuable clean Water are:

  • More than 4 million people died due to water related diseases.
  • 98% of water realted diseases occured in developing countries.
  • It takes about 300 litres of water to make the paper for just one Sunday newspaper. So use paper as less as you can, use E-mail and electronic sources more.
  • On average, women in Africa and Asia have to walk 3.7 miles to collect water. It can be more in rural villages of India.
  • In India alone, water born diseases cost the economy 73 million working days per year.
  • Global sales of bottled water account for over $60-$80 billion each year.
  • A child dies of water born diseases about every 15 Seconds.

If 10 years ago someone had given suggestion to sell the pure water, I’m sure people made good joke or laughed a lot on him. But nowadays mineral or purified water is billion dollar industry. People are ready to spend 20 rupees for water bottle, because we know it’s not easy to get pure or clean water.

One thing is sure; in future we are going to get shortage of clean water. In India you can see water shortage in every state, whether it’s capital of India, Delhi or a village of Bihar. People can’t get clean water easily.

What are your best ways to save water?

It might sound weird but consider this
Urine discharge by humans per void:~300 ml
Amount of water used in each flush :~ 5L

Therefore ratio of water used per flush to urine discharge per void: 5 x 1000/300 = 16.66

It means just to discharge one unit of urine you flush off 16.66 units of water !.

Now average human pee about ~5 times/ day.
Therefore water flushed: 5 x 5=25 L/ day
                                  = 25 x 30 = 750 L/ month
                                  = 750 x 12= 9000 L/ year.

Now consider if you take bath in a shower,
Average amount of water consumed by showers: 10L/ minute.
Amount of water consumed per bath(~20minutes): 200L/ bath.
Now consider the way in which most Indians take bath i.e.
 by using mug and bucket.

Use Bucket and Mugs

Average amount of water spent while taking bath via mug/bucket method= 20 L
Ratio of water used while bathing in shower to taking bath through mug/bucket =200/20=10

Therefore if you switch to taking bath via mug/bucket %of water saved = (200-20)/200*100 = 90%

Now if you decide to flush your toilet only once per two pee discharge(or replace flush system with half the cistern capacity),
Amount of water saved= 9000/2= 4500L/year.

And also if you decide to take bath by mug/bucket mechanism, then
water saved from flushing is equivalent to =4500/20= 225 baths = 7.5 months (if you bath daily)!

So just two simple steps and you can have bath for 7.5 months with no extra wastage of water
Here is some more ways to save water on daily basis:
  • People should water their lawns and gardens only when they need water.
  • Sprinkling is better than watering with pipe which can save many gallons of water per month.
  • Planting drought resistant plants is a better way to save water.
  • Leaky faucets and plumbing joints should be fixed immediately to save water and it may save around 20 gallons of water per day.
  • Use of flow restrictions to the showers also saves water.
  • Use of fully loaded washing machines and dishwashers saves water around 300 to 800 gallons per month.
  • Using less water per toilet helps in saving more water per day.
  • Washing fruits and vegetables in a water filled pot instead of washing under the running water saves water.
  • Rain water harvesting is a good idea by which the rain water can be stored and used in various purposes.
